Curriculum Overview PDF Print E-mail

At Ashmore State School we provide a diverse smorgasbord of Curriculum offerings to enrich and challenge our students’ academic, cultural and social learning.

We follow the Queensland Curriculum Assessment and Reporting (QCAR) framework as core curriculum. It aims to provide consistency in teaching and learning, assessment and reporting and is based on a set of essential learning standards.

The following framework was introduced to all Queensland schools in 2008:

Framework Component

Purpose

Essential Learnings

To provide clarity about what to teach

Standards

To provide a common language to describe achievement

Assessment Bank

To provide access to quality assessment items

Queensland Comparable Assessment Tasks (QCATs) in Years 4, 6 and 9

To demonstrate what students know and can do and support consistency of teacher judgments

Reporting

To support consistency of reporting

Teachers plan using the Essential Learnings and then develop the assessment that will demonstrate what each student needs to know and what they are able to do with this knowledge. Learning experiences are then sequenced incorporating a variety of strategies, including ICT skills. All year level curriculum programs are designed to align curriculum, pedagogy and assessment across the 8 Key Learning Areas (KLAs) of English, Maths, Science, SOSE, Health and Physical Education, LOTE (French), The Arts and Technology.

Information on all of the KLAs is available on the Queensland Studies Authority website (QSA) at www.qsa.qld.edu.au.

Year level teachers collaboratively plan four main integrated units throughout the year in conjunction with our Head of Curriculum. These units may have a major Science or SOSE focus; however, English and other KLAs are embedded into all teaching and learning.

Assessment and Reporting

Assessment is ongoing throughout each semester and uses a variety of assessment techniques to cater for all learning styles.

A written student report is issued twice during the year; the first towards the end of Semester One, the second during the later part of Semester Two. Formal parent / teacher interviews will occur at the end of Term Two. Either parents or the classroom teacher may request a formal interview during Semester Two or as requested by the teacher or parent. Parents are welcome to meet with teachers at other times to discuss a student’s progress or concerns.
